A clinical evaluation of botulinum toxin-A injections in the temporomandibular disorder treatment.

 2016 Jan 28;38(1):5. eCollection 2016.

A clinical evaluation of botulinum toxin-A injections in the temporomandibular disorder treatment.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

This study clinically evaluated the effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in the temporomandibular disorder (TMD) treatmentusing Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD).

METHODS:

A total of 21 TMD patients were recruited to be treated with BTX-A injections on the bilateral masseter and temporalis muscles and were followed up by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon highly experienced in the TMD treatment. For each patient, diagnostic data gathering were conducted according to the RDC/TMD. Characteristic pain intensity, disability points, chronic pain grade, depression index, and grade of nonspecific physical symptoms were evaluated. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was applied for statistical analysis.

RESULTS:

The results showed that more than half of the participants (85.7 %) had parafunctional oral habits such as bruxism or clenching. In comparison between pre- and post-treatment results, graded pain score, characteristic pain intensity, disability points, chronic pain grade, and grade of nonspecific physical symptoms showed statistically significant differences after the BTX-A injection therapy (p < 0.05). Most patients experienced collective decrease in clinical manifestations of TMD including pain relief and improved masticatory functions after the treatment.

CONCLUSIONS:

Within the limitation of our study, BTX-A injections in masticatory musculatures of TMD patients could be considered as a useful option for controlling complex TMD and helping its associated symptoms.

3rd Singapore Advanced Rhinoplasty Fresh Frozen Cadaveric Dissection Course

06 - 09 Nov 2016, Singapore

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The ENT Department at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital will be organizing the 3rd Singapore Advanced

Rhinoplasty Fresh Frozen Cadaveric Dissection Course from 6 to 9 November 2016. This intensive

course builds on the foundations laid during the very successful and well-received courses that we

have conducted over the last 2 years. The course this year has been enhanced by incorporating the

feedback from the participants and faculty of the previous courses.

The course comprises of two days of lectures and panel discussions covering the whole breadth of

surgical challenges encountered during Rhinoplasty and practical tips on managing them safely,

predictably and effectively. Structured panel discussions by our expert faculty will help delegates to

consolidate their understanding of some of the common problems encountered during analysis,

planning and execution of Rhinoplasty.

The next two days will be devoted to surgical dissection on high quality fresh frozen cadaveric

specimens to provide extensive hands-on training in a wide range of surgical techniques used in

Rhinoplasty. The laboratory portion of the course will be limited to 10 Dissectors and 10 Assistants

to allow for intimate supervision by experienced faculty. A unique feature of our course is 1:1

Dissector to Cadaveric specimen ratio.

We are privileged to have an outstanding faculty from USA, Europe and Asia to share their extensive

experience during the course. The teachers of honour for the course include internationally

renowned Facial Plastic Surgeons Prof Peter A. Adamson (Canada), Prof Stephen W. Perkins (USA)

and Prof Pietro Palma (Italy).

Singapore is a vibrant city with many historical and contemporary architectural landmarks. It is a

culinary paradise, which offers richness and variety of experiences that will help you to enjoy

Singapore in your own personal way. Travel to Singapore is easy as it is well connected to most

major airports in the world.

We would like to extend our warmest welcome to you and look forward to your presence in the

course.
