"Learning to do things differently"
18 - 20 January 2008
Basaveshwara Medical College & Hospital,
Chitradurga-577501, Karnataka, India.

A great Otologist has said "Every intra-op surgical decision needs to be custom-made to the individual patient's needs and the surgeon's capabilities and facilities. Surgeon's must avoid fitting their patients to their surgical techniques. On the contrary, we must adjust our surgical choices to fit each patient's situation needs. Multiple choices may have to be considered before each patient is offered a particular type of surgery, and surgeons need to be prepared to change their techniques accordingly and competently".
This statement clearly states that a good Otologist must know and be able to perform all the Otologic techniques in order to be a good surgeon. Therefore, theme for our course is "Flexible Otologic Surgery" in which we shall bring various Otologic Techniques through Didactic lectures, Video presentations, Cadaver dissection demonstrations and Live Surgery Demonstrations in an interactive manner. It is said, "Winners don't do different things. They do things differently" (Shiv Khera). Our objective will be to make you all winners by "Learning to do things differently".
Five eminent surgeons and teachers from different parts of our country shall bring diversified techniques on one platform. The course will be designed both for post-graduates, beginners, as well as senior surgeons. While for post-graduates the course will be a pre-examination otology review, for beginners the course will be a sort of "Otology Made Easy" and for the Senior Surgeons it will be "Otology Update".
The weather in Chitradurga in January is at its pleasant best. In case of an emergency, we have installed giant fans around the city, which you can witness yourself when you are here. Other than the scientific feast we wish to test your taste buds with central Karnataka food. A visit to Chitradurga will also take you back into the time through historical splendour of the city.
For a change, we wish to offer home stay and hospitality for interested delegates which is a new thing in tourism. Free accommodation is arranged for Post-graduates and DNB students at our Medical college hostels. Interested may contact us. Management and staff of Basaveshwara Medical College and Hospital shall leave no stone unturned to make this event a grand success and a memorable one for you.

To make this event more productive, the delegates may write to us about their expectation, doubts, difficulties, suggestions and creative criticism to our e-mail address.

Dr Kapil Dua,Tel Aviv Experience

Recently, in the month of JuIy, I had an opportunity of visiting The Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Israel. It is the largest and most technologically comprehensive tertiary, university-affiliated, medical and research center hospital in Israel. It comprises of 120 departments and clinics, 1,700 beds, and close to 6,000 healthcare professionals, including 850 doctors and 2,000 nurses.
The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center is one of the largest departments in Israel for the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat diseases. The department had a staff of 10 Israeli Board Certified staff physicians and 6 residents.
The department is known for the rehabilitation of the hearing impaired children. They have a well developed Cochlear implant program, which has been going on for the past 18 years. The director of the department, Professor Kronenberg, is the inventor of the suprameatal surgical technique for cochlear implantation. It is a unique new technique, developed for cochlear implantation which bypasses the conventional route for cochlear implantation and makes the drilling of the mastoid (skull bone behind the ear) unnecessary. They have used this technique for over 200 patients in the past 10 years. It is the largest center in Israel for cochlear implantation with an overall experience of over 450 cochlear implant patients This technological breakthrough changes the life of children, enables them to develop, especially in the educational mainstream of modern life.
The consultants in the department were very cooperative, always ready to share the views on the various otology surgeries being performed over there. I had the opportunity of sharing my experience in FESS and advanced endoscopic sinus surgeries as they have just started off with the advanced procedures like skullbase surgeries, DCR, etc.
I also had the opportunity to move around and enjoy the living history of Jerusalem and Bethlehem ( now in Palestine) and the highly advanced city of Tel Aviv.

On the whole, it was a good learning experience and I hope I use that for providing better healthcare to our patients.

Implantable Hearing Aids

For patients with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss a new implantable device became available. The Vibrant P (programmable) and HF (high frequency) Soundbridges (Symphonix)work by increasing the amplitude of natural ossicular vibration. They achieve this through a floating mass transducer attached to the long process of the incus (f. The transducer, a hermetically sealed titanium bobbin wrapped in gold wire, contains a magnet (the floating mass) that moves back and forth according to the frequency and amplitude of the sound signal. It is driven by an electronic processor unit, which is connected to it by a fine wire. The processor unit modulates an electrical signal delivered by a receiver implanted in the skull just behind the ear. The external component of the system is held on the side of the patient's head by a magnet and concealed behind the hairline. It contains a microphone, battery, and the electronics to convert sound energy into a signal that can be transmitted to the internal receiver. Because this device directly drives the ossicular chain, auditory feedback is eliminated. Furthermore, the ear canal is not occluded by a mould.

Nasal endoscopes - a New Patent
Document Type and Number:
United States Patent 4517962
Link to this page:
This invention relates to an endoscope for endonasal surgery for which different optical systems are required. With this invention it is possible to exchange an optical system and/or a matching flushing and suction shaft as desired while still utilizing the same endoscope shaft handle and without requiring the interchange of the complete endoscope including its handle. To accommodate this function, the handle including flushing and suction passages can be mated with interchangeable flushing and suction shafts and a desired optical system. Such shafts and optical system are releasably connected to the endoscope handle.

Allergic Rhinitis Update

An update on allergic Rhinitis treatment was held at Hotel Le Meridian Delhi on July 8,2007.It was attended by nearly 100 prominent ENT Surgeons of North India .The speaker was Dr Anjuli S. Nayak from USA. The talk was elaborate touching various aspects of allergy. It was stressed that a sizable population of adults and children are effected by this debilitating condition and the incidence is on the rise.
